Development of detailed inventory of persistent organic pollutants (POPs)
Project description
The assignment was necessitated by the UNDP project “Environmentally Sound Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in industrial and hazardous waste sectors in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, financed by the Government of Sweden, whose overall objective was to reduce risk for people’s health and the environment through the prevention of U-POP releases, shifting from POPs toward non-POPs chemicals in the plastic industry, and sound destruction of at least 50 tons of POPs waste.
To enable the achievement of the project objective, Enova in consortium with TAUW have been contracted to conduct a detailed inventory of POPs substances present in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including POPs pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in their original form, in contaminated materials and equipment, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS).
Type of services provided
The activities under this project are being implemented in the following four areas:
- Inventory of stocks of POP Pesticides
- Inventory of stocks of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) contaminated materials and equipment
- Developing inventories of Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), Hexabromobiphenyl (HBB), Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and U-POPs
- Conducting preliminary risk assessment and prioritization of sites potentially contaminated with POPs
